Purnululu National Park

Wind from the Tanami Desert and rainfall have shaped these distinctively domed towers from sandstones and conglomerates (pebbles and boulders cemented together).

Dark algae grow in bands on rock that holds more moisture. In between surface weathering has oxidised iron and manganese in the sandstone to brilliant outback ochre.

Interspersed in the Gorge are palm trees (Livistonia victoriae), which are thought to be living fossils left over from the ancient Gondwanan rainforest that used to cover the region. They are now a part of the genus of palms native to southern, south-eastern, and eastern Asia, Australasia, and the Horn of Africa.

Together they form an iconic landscape.
