Crocodile Among the Lilies, acrylic on canvas, 103 x 146cm $5500
(Crocodylus porosus)
The habitats of the saltwater crocodile are saltwater and brackish wetlands from India’s east coast across South East Asia and the Sudaic region to northern Australia and Micronesia.
In Australia it ranges across the top-end coastal fringe from Broome to mid- Queensland, with an estimated adult population of 100,000 to 200,000. It has a tendency to travel long distances at sea, while on the coast it generally spends the tropical wet season in freshwater swamps and rivers, moving downstream to the estuaries during the dry season.
Males can grow to over 6 m (20 ft) in length and more than 1,000 kg (2,000 lb) in weight.
It feeds opportunistically by ambushing almost any other animal, including sharks, and then drowns or swallows it whole.
